Meet the 29-Year-Old Who Is The Youngest Independent Goldsmith in Austria: Rosa Marlene

Rosa Marlene Wien

Rosa Marlene opened her atelier in September in the 7th district of Vienna and of course I had to pay her a visit. I just can’t deny my love of beautiful jewelry and enjoy the sparkle up close.

Rosa Marlene is the youngest self-employed goldsmith in Austria with her own atelier and her pieces are inspired by nature. She loves to translate personal stories into handmade unique jewelry and also cares about sustainability when sourcing for materials. All the gold and silver she uses is recycled gold and silver from Austria or Germany, the wood she uses is from Germany and even the dainty chains found here are manufactured in Carinthia. Her atelier is airy and bright with her work station visible to everyone looking in making it possible to see the work of a goldsmith which is normally hidden up close. I was lucky enough to ask her some questions and get to see her work her magic.

What was your first job and how did you land it?

Well, my very first job was in „Tee und Geschenke“. I heard they were looking for help and so I asked. Some others as well, but it seemed I was the girl they were looking for. Haha.

Tell us a little bit about your career journey. Did you always knew you wanted to become a goldsmith?

No. I finished school. Traveled the world for nearly a year for exact this reason. I didn’t know what to do. Everybody around me where like “I gonna study this, I gonna be that..” and I was like “well, I don’t know and thats why I gonna travel the world first, there I will get an idea what to become, for sure. Back home I visited Vienna, in March. 1st of April I signed my first contract for my first apartment. I stayed and knew I had to do something creative and something with my hands. So I was looking for “Carpenter, Konditor or Goldsmith“. You can tell what I chose.

When did you decide to start your own company and what were your first steps?

I always knew I wanted to be self-employed, my own boss. In the beginning of this journey I created my first logo and was looking for studios. And while I just finished my studies I found the perfect location to start my dream. So I called my family and asked for advice. That were the first steps. My parents asked if I knew what that would mean. Selbstständig – selbst und ständig! I kinda knew… now I know much better. At first I thought about a whole different concept.

What are the biggest challenges you have com across? How did you overcome them?

Well, I think if the challenge is overcome you can’t remember. But I thinks it’s constantly the fear that your designs won’t find interest. About which you thought about so many hours and wherein you have put so much effort, love and power in.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

I get up, walk my dog / go into the forest. Get a few quiet moments for myself because a typical day includes a lot of talking. Customers want my advice, my opinion, my “Rat”. They want to know something about the story behind the collections. So I open the store. Put some nice music on, turn on every light there is and make myself coffee. Then I check my appointments and orders and get right to it. Making the wishes come true.

If there is time in between I’m on my working bench creating new stuff or just trying new things. Right now I’m working on a setting I’ve done many years ago to re make it. Just for fun!

What piece of jewelry is something every woman should own?

For myself I love a unique pair of earrings. I made myself something with my birth stones to remind me of the inner power and dreams! I love to wear them – even so they are a bit fancy. And a cool bangle set is a nice highlight as well. So short story long… A beautiful pair of earrings and a strong bracelet combo is doing a good job!

Your logo is a bee. Why this focus on bees?

Because I think my grandma is reborn as one. So I thought if she can’t beeee with me in real life, she’s with me like this. Also I wanted to set a golden statement because bees are dying at alarming rates and this is a problem! But then using bees for decoration became kinda trendy quickly. Big brands jumped on this topic but I hope they don’t use it just because it’s cute. My hope is that when people start talking about it, it will change something.

Who would your dream customer be and what would you like to design for her/him?

This would be someone who dares to wear an extraordinary piece. Who gives me a color scheme and tells me with which materials I should work and I can create something that is totally personal to this person.

Make sure to visit the atelier of Rosa Marlene, it’s so worth it. Her pieces are so beautiful and rare – they make the perfect gift as well. I hope you enjoyed this one & much love,
Nika
