I’ve been obsessed with skin care as long as I can remember. I still have my cousin’s voice in mind when she was at my place for a sleep over when we were both teens and trying different creams in the bathroom and she said: „I don’t know how you do it but you have a cream for EVERYTHING!!“
Background info on my skin
When I was 15 or 16 y/o my skin started to break out and from there on I’m dealing with acne prone skin (as well as oiliness and enlarged pores what goes hand in hand mostly), sometimes better, sometimes worse. Over the years I’ve been to different dermatologists and in the end I always had the feeling the products I was using from them would do nothing at all or make it even worse. I will never forget this one cream (called Benzaknen) that burned so much when putting it on my face that I was standing at the open window to get some cold air to make it a bit more bearable.
My skin always was oily as well and the products I’ve used were very harsh and drying. It took me years to learn that fighting oily skin doesn’t always has to be with drying products. It all got better when I started with Dr. Hauschka products (which I’ve used for about one year or so) – in this time I finally stepped away from harsh soap and gel cleansers which take everything away from your skin and dry it out to an awful point. I also used face oils for the first time. Since then my skin has totally improved (but still not to that level where I’m totally confident with it).
On the hunt
If you have troubled skin you may know the fear of trying new products because there is always the possibility to mess things up and make them even worse as they’ve been. So almost the whole year of 2016 I was on the hunt for a new skin care routine and in September (we’ve been on vacation in Florida, so hello Sephora) I finally found a game changer!!
I always wanted to try Sunday Riley because of their famous Luna Sleeping Night Oil but I also have known it wouldn’t be right for my skin concerns. BUT then they came out with some new products and I couldn’t wait to try them out. So when I was at Sephora I asked for a tester of the U.F.O. Face Oil and also got one of the Martian Mattifying Melting Water-Gel Toner. I was able to test them on my face for about one week. As I couldn’t see a bad reaction on my skin and the first impression was really positive I took both.
U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil
From the past I know facial oils do wonders on my skin, so I was super excited to try this one out. Sunday Riley’s U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil is described as a „quick-absorbing, medicated dry oil to clear congested pores, treats and prevents acne, and smoothes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for clearer, smoother skin“. It also contains 1.5% salicylic acid – hello acne fighting!! My skin soaks it up very quick and feels really nice afterwards. Honestly, there’s nothing I hate more than having something on my skin the whole night that makes me feel uncomfortable. The trick is to work it really nicely into your skin. Only thing that may bother some people is that it has a stronger scent (what can be irritating for your skin in the worst case). I use it once a day as a step of my night routine.
Martian Mattifying Melting Water-Gel Toner
The toner that goes with the face oil I also fell in love with. It has a mint green color and liquid gel consistency that melts easy into the skin without any sticky residue. Key ingredients are bentonite clay what helps to mattify and to reduce pore size. Together marshmallow and green tea fights redness and calms the skin. I only use it in the evening before I use the face oil.
Where to buy
In the US you’re able to find Sunday Riley at Sephora or online. Living in the EU the best place to shop for Sunday Riley is cult beauty
Face Oil ($80 via Sephora / £68 via cult beauty)
Toner ($55 via Sephora / £48 via cult beauty)
All in all I totally recommend this products for everyone who has oily skin and tends to break outs or acne prone skin. The only downside is that they’re on the pricier side. On the other hand especially the face oil will last a very long time. I bought mine in September, use it almost every night and there’s only the tiniest amount missing. I use about 4 drops on my face for every application.
Have you ever tried a face oil? What are your experiences with it?
